An intranet is a key communication, knowledge management, and engagement tool in modern organizations. An intranet is, in essence, a handbook of the organization. It connects personnel to work-related information, to fellow employees, organizational culture, values, knowledge, and much more. The design and content standards explain how the content should be added and maintained, as well as the design elements to be included. Traditionally, employees do not go to an intranet to hang-out. They are seeking a phone number, a strategy, a policy, a form, information about a branch or unit, the latest news - then they are gone until they have another information need. Therefore, it is important that there is consistency and predictability in the information architecture, content layout, and design elements. Familiarity breeds find-ability.
